The Polish coast - there and back again

overcast 20 °C

We began the next leg of our journey with a small detour into Czechia. We found a very nice windy forest road with adorable villages along the way, and had a nice picnic.

Next we headed to Goerlitz, a beautiful old town on the border of Germany and Poland. We arrived on a hot summer afternoon and wandered down to the river through the old city and had some ice cream.

We headed a bit west back into Germany to stay the night at what we hoped would be a delightful campsite close to a lake. Instead we got to stay in a hot overcrowded parking lot with everyone in the county, including Fort Knox security level bathrooms and a view of the nearby nuclear plant. Needless to say, we didn't stay a second night.
The next day, we made a long drive north in a mad dash to the Polish coast. We didn't quite make it all the way, but ended up in a municipal campsite with very rudimentary facilities that was mostly quiet and empty.

We headed up to the Polish coast early the next (Saturday) morning, only to find the entire population of Poland joining us on the drive. We made a brief stop at a cool open air museum demonstrating how the Slavs and Vikings lived in the 10th century. 20190720_114636.jpg20190720_115331.jpg20190720_114150.jpg
They were also selling delicious pastries cooked over the open fire, which we partook of after Max waited in line for a while after this guy:

After miles of traffic jams and flashbacks about living on Cape Cod in the summer, we managed to secure a spot at a packed but nice campsite pretty close to the Baltic Sea.

We stayed an extra day (Sunday) at the nice campsite to do some weekly checks on the truck and rest up a bit.
Then, Monday morning, we planned to head east along the coast to explore it a bit more, but after sitting in multiple traffic jams and making very little progress, we decided our future lay somewhere more inland. So we headed southeast and immediately found relief from the congestion. Currently we are parked at a campsite in the middle of the woods with nobody nearby, except for a friendly wolfhound who Rory does NOT want to play with.
Next destination: Malbork, which has the world's largest castle!
